Born in Oporto, he graduated from the E.S.B.A.P. in 1940, having frequented the school as from 1926. He was part of the “Mais Além” Group, launched
in 1929 against naturalism and academism of the education of Fine-Arts. Between stays in Oporto and in Galicia, the work of Alvarez shows landscaping
which owes nothing to naturalism and nor to modernism with bright colours which many of his colleagues of his generation chose. He opted for
landscapes strangely populated by slim figures with a visionary look or unsettled and somewhat enigmatic.
