Born in Vidago, he frequented the Painting course at the E.S.B.A.L. which he failed to complete. After leaving the course, he went to Paris on an F.C.G.
scholarship. There he worked under the guidance of Arpad-Szènes in 1959. At this juncture he was a founder of the “KWY” Group. As part of this group he
has staged various exhibitions abroad in the 1960's. On his return he was to dedicate himself to teaching at various institutions. He also worked in the
fields of performance and video.
Having initially sought out gestualism and informalism which interested him, he gradually simplified his painting, through major deviations,
subsequently referring to the history of Portuguese art, without involving the constant formal aspects of his work.
