The exhibition “António Cardoso, Director… 'desde que nasci…'”

1 May, 2023

“António Cardoso, Director… 'desde que nasci…'” is open to the public until September 3, 2023, at the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum. Comprising works by Professor António Cardoso donated to the ASCMM, this exhibition – which is also a tribute – it presents painting, drawing and documents, official and personal, that will help in understanding it.

“This exhibition is part of the due recognition to Professor António Cardoso, who accompanied the creation process of the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum in its first decades and who directed it, very distinctly, until the end of his days”, emphasizes José Luís Gaspar, mayor of Amarante. Recognition shared by Laura Castro, Regional Director of Culture of the North and close to António Cardoso, in the exhibition's presentation text: "António Cardoso is part of the history of this museum. He knew his role in Amarante, he knew his works by heart, the evolution of your space and your program."

It is recalled that António Cardoso died in June 2021, aged 89, and left a legacy that extends far beyond the borders of the county of Amarante. He took the Primary Teaching course in 1941, studied painting at Academia Alvarez and attended the Porto School of Fine Arts. He presented school television programs and was director of Educational Television and Teleschool before 1974. He was a member of the Ministry of Education's Commission for the renovation of the Basic and Secondary School Student Assessment System.

He graduated in History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto in 1974, where he would go on to obtain a PhD in Art History with a thesis on Arq. Jose Marques da Silva. From 1981 onwards, he taught at that Faculty, which he represented in the Heritage Committee of the Porto City Council, between 1996 and 2001.
