MANUEL BAPTISTA

1936

Biography
Born in Faro, he studied at the E.S.B.A.L. where he completed the painting course in 1962 and where he was a teacher between 1964 and 1972. In 1963
he was on a scholarship with the F.C.G. in Paris and in 1968 he studied at the Higher Culture Institute in Ravena. In Faro he managed the Municipal
Gallery Trem. Besides painting , he carried out works in tapestry. He was one of the painters who, in 1971, took part in the redecoration of the Lisbon café
“A Brasileira”.
The painting of Manuel Baptista frequently resorts to collage. He sometimes paints elements cut and adhered volumes and reliefs, with a suggestion
of rhythm and effects which are dark and bright and very subtle. A great series of works suggesting “ranges” explores these resources to which is added
an extremely careful light work.
