JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES

1939

Biography
Born in Guimarães, he studied painting and engraving. In 1986 he followed a course in Holography at the Royal Smith College in London. After a
prolonged stay in Angola, he gained an F.C.G. scholarship in 1976 to 77 and 1986.
He is one of the contemporary Portuguese artists with the greatest international projection, carrying out exhibitions all over the world. His work
developed a very specific formal grammar, usually presenting large-scale pieces with exuberant colours, dealing with themes of Portuguese history and
culture, proposing almost symbolic figures in simplified forms. Humour and communicability intertwined in his works.
